Expert Advice from a Cape Town Event Organiser
In our latest “Five Tips” series, we share valuable pearls of wisdom from top wedding and events industry professionals. For this wedding feature, we sat down with Michelle Evans, senior event organiser at Morii, to talk about what truly matters on your big day, and how to avoid sweating the small details.

Pick what plucks the heartstrings
When planning your wedding, take a moment to reflect on the celebrations you’ve attended before. What are the memories that truly linger? For me, it was the delicious food, great music that had everyone dancing, heartfelt speeches, and seeing the couple genuinely enjoying themselves. Invest in those core experiences – the ones that spark emotion – and let the rest go, especially if you’re working with a budget. This approach will ensure your wedding feels authentic and unforgettable.

Let’s talk food
At the end of the day, your wedding is a celebration with your loved ones. Think of it as hosting the ultimate dinner party. For our wedding, we chose a family-style dinner for so many reasons. It created a relaxed, homely vibe, allowing guests to help themselves and feel at ease, while also simplifying logistics like dietary requirements and service timing.
Everything came out at once, letting people curate their own plates, which added to the sense of warmth and togetherness. My advice? Always do a menu tasting with your caterer and hand-pick the dishes that you truly love. Great food always leaves a lasting impression, and that’s what your guests will remember. -
Décor: make it uniquely yours
The world of wedding décor is overflowing with inspiration, but the magic happens when you make it your own. I had a clear vision for our wedding and created a moodboard for my florist, then trusted her to bring it to life.
Here’s my advice: while wedding flowers are beautiful, they only last the day. Don’t panic if your dream peony isn’t in season or if your wedding doesn’t exactly match your Pinterest board. Your décor should feel personal, not staged. It’s your story, your style, and that’s what makes it timeless. -
Choose your wedding vendors wisely
One of the most important investments you can make is in the right team of suppliers. After years in the Cape Town events industry, I’ve built strong relationships with vendors I trust implicitly, and that made a world of difference. From catering and décor to lighting, furniture, and even my gown, every detail was handled by experts who cared as much about our day as we did.
Building a reliable vendor team ensures a seamless, stress-free celebration, and ultimately, the luxury wedding experience you’ve been dreaming of. -
Get organised – and stay organised
Organisation is the secret to enjoying your wedding day. When my husband and I started planning, we sat down to identify our “non-negotiables” – the elements that mattered most to us. For me, it was having exceptional food and a brilliant photographer (we were lucky enough to have a talented friend capture the magic). For him, it was about staying relaxed and being fully present on the day.
To make that happen, I created colour-coded schedules for our suppliers and bridal party – complete with key contacts, timelines, playlists, and even the order of speeches. This level of organisation meant I could enjoy every moment without worrying about the behind-the-scenes details, and that’s exactly what I wish for every couple we work with.
So there you have it: expert wedding planning advice from our very own Michelle. Whether you’re planning a luxury Cape Town wedding or an intimate destination celebration, remember: it’s about focusing on what truly matters and letting the rest fall into place.
